CCTV — a closed-circuit television system; surveillance where the picture goes to a recorder, not on air.

PoE / PoE+ — powering a camera through the same network cable that carries the picture. One cable, less installation.

NVR — a network recorder that stores footage from IP cameras. The heart of the system.

DVR — a digital recorder for analog cameras. An older standard, still in use.

VMS — software for managing surveillance: viewing, search and export of footage.

ONVIF — a common standard that lets one maker's camera work with another's recorder.

WDR — wide dynamic range; a camera that sees light and shadow at once, without white and black blobs.

IR range — how far a camera sees at night with infrared illumination.

LUX — a measure of light; how much light a camera needs for a usable picture.

H.265 / H.264 — footage compression formats. H.265 keeps the same quality on half the storage.

RG59 — a coaxial cable for analog systems. IP cameras use network cable.

IP66 / IK10 — protection classes: IP66 against water and dust, IK10 against impact and vandalism.

ANPR — automatic number-plate recognition, for parking and barriers.

RFID / NFC — contactless identification by card or phone for access control.

UPS — an uninterruptible power supply; keeps the system alive through a power cut.

Verification — checking an event on screen before calling; the difference between an alarm that sounds and one that protects.

Once you know the terms, the next step is camera count and storage.
